The concept of the Purple Heart was established by George Washington in 1782. It was called the Badge of Military Merit and was a purple cloth made in the shape of a heart. It is the oldest military award given to US military members. To receive the Purple Heart, one must be wounded or killed while serving and protecting the US from an enemy. It can only be awarded in the name of the President. Our Purple Heart is way to show pride for your service to our country or for loved ones who have lost a family member that has been awarded the Purple Heart for serving.
